Getting a career in the travel industry going is actually very simple.... One of the easist ways is to become an outside sales agent for an established agency. You gain valuable experience, meet new people, and make some money being involved in a field that interests you!
If your sales are high enough, you earn Agent Discount privileges with the airlines, but regardless of your sales figures, you can obtain discounts from almost all of the hotels and car companies.
After working in outside sales myself for about two years, I now own two agencies of my own. I started with no experience at all - other than a knowledge of Eaasy Sabre, then went on to use System One Access for my bookings, and now I am running my own agencies with Apollo by Gemini (simply because I am in Canada)
All of this was a result of my love for traveling. If you want a career, go for it! You'll love it! Also, if you want any pointers, or have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me!

I am currently going to travel school, nights, and working as an outside agent for the Agency that sponsors the school I'm attending. I have been working in law enforcement for 20 plus years and am ready for a career change. It is my goal to become a full time agent within the next 6 months and leave my current job. I really enjoy dealing with people, but after 20 years of dealing with unhappy people, either bad guys or the victims of bad guys, I decided I wanted to deal with happy people for a change. I enjoy traveling and am looking forward to working with clients who are happily looking forward to travel, rather than the miserable people I've spent my whole adult life dealing with.

I would love to get involved in the travel agent field, but I understand the pay is low, ($15,000/ yr range). Is it possible to make a better salary? I love planning trips and help my friends find hotels, airlines, cruise, etc. now. My mother is a tour guide. Her pay is very low also.

I got the Independent Travel Agencies of America (ITAA) info. on 12/10/93. The fee is $4K. I am on the Travel Forum on CompuServe in section 16, called The Biz. They gave me advice against using ITAA!! In NY, they know of a case where the attorney general had to step in to get someone their money back. Many travel professionals were against this association!! ITAA offers thier card when in the Travel Business, everyone is demanding the IATAN card! This arrangement with ITAA seems NOT to be a good deal!

I have been discussing this organization with travel professionals on Compuserve & I have received over 14 messages telling me to stay away from ITAA!! They are telling me one can get a relationship in outside sales with an ARC agency & not pay a fee. Suppliers don't seem to recognize ITAA! They told me the fees for being an ITAA sgency, makes receiving a profit unworkable! Also, one case of the attorney general having to step in to get someone their money back!
I'm told don't invest in this ITAA!!

Travel is alluring.
Quick buck artists know this and attempt to draw you in with great promises of tremendous benefits/savings/freebies etc.
Travel work is a grind...good if you can handle it but it is not a hi- pay luxury lifestyle...BUT if you can specialize (I do commercial only and mostly international and RTW's in C and F class) you can make a better buck than the average "I'lI do everything" agent.
You need to specialize, whether its honeymoons, cruises vermont, adventure, gay whatever
From the outside in w/o out exeperience: YOU SHOULD NEVER PAY ANYONE TO BE A "TRAVEL AGENT"
If you can drive a sale into an agency that it didn't have before (even if you know knowthing about travel) you should be able to capture part of the commission earned by the agency. The more work you do on a deal (beyond birddogging,--research, actual booking, ticketing etc, etc) the more of a cut you should get.
In general (very) its a 10% commission game. For each $100 in domestic airfare there is about $9 commission (the other buck is federal tax) You'll be negotiating a percentage of the $9/100.
In my case (I have $350-500,000 in annual gross sales) I get 45% of the commission. I could ask for more, but I get the agency to absorb my overhead ( I have no local clients, so they pay phone, fax, fedx etc). I am moving to a new agency where I'll get 80% but have to cover my own expenses (so if I get an actual raise of 9-13% I'll come out ahead((ace in the hole: I have a 1/2 milion dollar 30%commision deal signed for '95))
As your business grows you'll earn more but it is all based on who you know and getting them to buy from you (or through your affiliated agency). Its a simple game if you can find a place that fits you.
Re: ITAA and IATAN & ARC I'm a bit PO'd that I had to spend $14 on an IATAN industry card. Why? Because before the conjob operators it really wasn't necessary. Now it is because of all the phony "credentials circulating.
Also...the way these places work is that you are a fish that brings them $4k or whatever and then drives sales into their agency (that they make $$ on) Real businesses will pay you for that. These are ripoffs caring little for you or the customers you birddog for them.
$4000 in member fees = over $40,000 in travel sales earnings. The enlisting agency may make more on memberships than it does on travel sales. And you will have to sell over $40k just to break even.
Also beware of the Travel Express clubs or whatever charging anywhere from $49.95 to $199.95 membership. This is in general an MLM deal. MatildaT has more info.
Perhaps the best advice if you want to travel alot is find a way to support your habit, then find a great and knowledgeable agent to work out your travel plans.

I've been working for an airline for 8 years now, both on the ground and as a flight attendant. As you might guess, times are tough for the airlines right now, but there are a lot of great positives about working for an airline (unfortunately, salary is usually not one of them - but you can get by!). Anyone who'd like some inside information about this can e-mail me or post a note, particularly if you know someone who wants to try this line of work.

I thought that I would add several items to this thread on getting into the industry. Take a travel course, subscribe to Travel Weekly & other trade mags, get travel business books, work either inside/out, be a tour leader, join trade organizations and network on boards such as AOL, CompuServe's (Travsig forum, the Biz for Travel Professionals), Prodigy's Travel Board, GEnie's traval Round Table, etc.
Do any of you other people in the Travel Industry have any suggestions, please?

I know what you mean about wanting to combine work and pleasure. When one enjoys their work, it is the best thing in the world!! I don't know of anyone looking to hire an overseas photographer, but I'm sure that the opportunities exist. A dear friend of mine is overseas working as a photographer and he gets to travel. He is very happy. Also, one might start a business combining travel & photography, maybe taking people on tours or selling photos? I'm just brainstorming! Maybe someone else has an idea.
I also am looking to combine my love of travel, with a travel business or carrer.

An outside agent is similar to a real estate agent, who works on a commission basis. It helps to have lots of friends and relatives who travel, who would be willing to call you for reservations. If you don't have any travel agency technical training, it may be difficult to find someone willing to hire you. Commission ranges from about 25-50% of the commission that the agency receives. For example, on a $300.00 plane ticket, the agency receives about $27.00. Your share would be anywhere from $6-13.50. I've been an outside agent for many years, and enjoy making my own schedule. You may even be eligible for discounted travel benefits.

A great book is "Flying High in Travel: A Guide to Careers in Travel and Tourism" by Karen Rubin. There are all levels of training available, from six week vocational programs (good if you have plenty of work experience, and just need technical skills), to vocational schools (watch out for the cost!), to community colleges (good starting point), to colleges/universities (best for those with management goals).

It all depends on whether you are an employee or an independent contractor. Errors & Omission Insurance is wise, either way. As a independent contractor, one is probably liable! The exact answer is best answered by an attorney. You probably can be an agent for more than one agency provided you are truly an independent contractor. You are wise to seek information on liability. Speak to an attorney!

About credit charges. Note that on over the phone charges, without a signature from the client on file, the card company might not be responsible for stolen or unauthorized credit cards. Thus this could leave the agent or agency responsible! The affiliate agency would explain this information to the outside sales agent!

Hi! I myself am also new to this but I have gained a wealth of information due to networking! If you are an IC, you will need errors & ommission insurance. You need a contract with your affiliate agency. You will be responsible for everything! If you are a true IC, you can have more than one agency! Be careful about credit card charges over the phone. You need a signature on file. Get more info. about credit cards from your affiliate agency or from the credit card company. Outside Sales Support Network can help IC's. Other's have asked this question so, I'll try to put together some OSSN info and upload it to the library.

I'm close to starting my travel business...I worked on the plan over 1 year...am getting legal counsel...have gotten suppliers...have subscribed to trade journals & joined trade organizations....I had actually started planning a travel business in 1989 & in 1992-93 I took two travel courses...I still have a ways top go...Good luck to other's with the dream of starting a travel business!

Stay away from ITAA (Intenational Travel Assoc. of America). They are in trouble with the NY state's attorney general's office. They charge a fee of $3800. One can operate an unappointed travel agency by either affiliating with an ARC agency (Outside sales-costs nothing or very little!) or working directly with the suppliers. Some suppliers will work with an unappointed travel agency! You need some books on how to run a home travel business or an unappointed travel business. Outside Sales Support Network sells such books. Also, the Biz on Travsig on CompuServe might be able to help with information on the Travel Industry. It is for Travel Industry professionals. They will probably allow travel school students in the Biz. Read and learn all that you can on travel. If you sell travel as an IC, you will need errors & ommission insurance. Must have clients sign waivers for some kinds of travel & must supply disclosures. Also, as an IC, you will need to be sure that you are complying with local laws. OSSN can help an IC. They also offer fams on cruise ships.

Stick to check cashing. Selling travel is nothing but headaches. Especially since you would be selling mostly to low-income people, who don't even have a checking account. There would be little profit for you. Sorry to be so blunt, but it's a low income profession with only headaches.
The carrer is a lot of work. It is rewarding. Take a course in travel & tourism. I'm starting a travel business soon. I don't know when I'll get a vacation? The flip side is that there are fams...if you have time to attend. Do research to see if it is for you!

I am considering a career in the travel industry and I need your opinions. I am currently a teacher with a master's degree, but I am thinking about working at home on travel, via the modem, telephone and computer. I subscribe to several travel magazines and have a special interest in the Caribbean and Cape Cod. I read books and articles on travel whenever possible. How could I get going in the industry? Would I really need to take a class specific for travel/tourism? Would I need to get experience first through a travel agency? I plan on having children soon, and I want to be a full-time mother. But I have this idea of starting up a small travel business out of my home. Is this realistic? I would really go out and talk to a lot of travel agents before you invest any money in the career. The profit margin is extremely slim and the hours and customers can be very demanding. Also. without being hooked into one of the major airlines' computerized reservations systems I think it would be difficult to operate out of your house. I don't want to be so discouraging, but I have had several friends that are agents and it is getting increasingly difficult to make a profit in this particular niche of the industry.

Thank you for your honest advice. I will definitely talk to people in the business to get their perspective. I don't want to be really naive and optimistic if in reality an at-home travel career will not be possible. I just find it so interesting! Maybe I am in a teaching "rut" right now! Twelve year olds can be demanding!

Research the career more. I am an ex-engineer who is planning to start a travel business. I have worked hard on it but I feel that in my case it is worth it! Take a course in Travel & Tourism. The profit margin could be slim...but that is for a conventional travel agency that has overhead...Selling only air isn't profitable...One needs to find a speciality in travel and find out what the commission would be. With some specialities, one can work directly with suppliers, getting the 10-15% commission. Of course, you need to structure the business, get errors & ommission insurance, etc. The e & o insurance is necessary if one works as an Independent Contractor, since the IC is responsible for the travel arrangements. Learn all that you can before doing this. Then write a business plan....It can be short.

My guess is that one needs a license. Maybe check NY general business law or call the NY state license bureau in Albany to see the requirements.
